Alternate courses vs. Graduate courses
Use of field in Course and Student
There are two codes for ALT:
U Undergraduate student
A Grad/Alternate student
There are two data files where this code is used:
STUDENT - .ALTRN
COURSE - .ALTCREDLEV
STUDENT FILE: Students who are not pursuing an undergraduate degree have "A" (alternate) placed in this field. There is no way to set up two different kinds of alternate students. The "A" can have various meanings, however. Two examples are "non-degree seeking" and "graduate" student.
If not filled with "A," the field is filled with "U" (undergraduate). No other codes are used. The field is not left blank.
A student whose flag is "A" (called an "alternate" student) is allowed to take either "A" courses or "U" courses, but care must be taken when creating the academic transcript--for an "alternate" student, the transcript should be created using either an (A)lternate or (C)ombined option.
COURSE FILE: The same logic is applied to the Course records. Use "A"
if the course is offered as "zero credit" or "graduate credit;" otherwise, use
"U."
If a Move to History occurs without the proper Alternate coding in place, contact the System Manager with the .SSN and .COURSEID and request that the proper code be loaded into REG.DAT.
