Fix Skylite Disabled by Spyware

Fix #1:

Several users have reported a problem with SkyLite where, after previously performing normally, all attempts to connect to a host fail while other terminal emulation software can connect without difficulty.  In each case, known spyware has been discovered on the problem systems.  Although in a few situations, removing all spyware solved the problem, in most cases the problem persisted, even after uninstalling and reinstalling SkyLite.

If you have a system that is exhibiting these symptoms, you should rule out other possible problems, such as host name resolution and other typical connectivity issues.  You can determine the existence of spyware using available tools, such as Lavasoft Ad-aware or Spybot Search and Destroy.

To prevent or kill spyware, download and run these two free programs:

http://www.spybot.com  (select Spybot Search & Destroy)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/  (select Ad-Aware)

The SGU Helpdesk recommends running both these applications once a week.

Fix #2:

If you are still unable to make a connection, you can make a minor modification in the session settings to work around the problem.  SkyLite stores its session settings in files with a .SES filetype.  Using a text editor (such as Notepad), follow the steps below to modify any .SES (SkyLite Session) file for which the connection problem occurs.

  1. Locate the file session.SES (substitute for "session" the name used to save SkyLite settings).  Session files are typically in either "My Documents" or the SkyLite  program folder.

  2. Locate the line that starts with "winsock=" (in the [NetSetup] section) and, within that line, locate "blocking=0".

  3. Change "blocking=0" to "blocking=1" and exit the editor, saving the change.

No known ill effects will result from making the above change. There is no downside to making this change in all .SES files, even if you are not currently having a problem making connections.

Fix #3:

Locate all .ses files and delete them.  Open Skylite and create a new .ses file (using "save as").
